Protect yourself from fire

A working fire alarm saves lives. Check it once a month.

A fire extinguisher or fire blanket can put out smaller fires and prevent fire from spreading.

Never leave lit candles unattended and always put them out when you leave.

Be on the alert when entering the door code. A door code is aimed at preventing unauthorised access. Make sure that no-one is looking when you enter the door code. Also, you shouldn’t let people you don’t know come into the stairwells and please keep an eye out for anyone moving around our communal spaces.

PREVENT BURGLARIES

A lot of burglaries occur when the occupant is on holiday. Because of that, it might be a good idea to let your nearest neighbours know you’ll be away so they can keep an eye out. Other recommendations include fitting window locks if you live on the ground floor and installing break-in protection on exterior doors to prevent attempted break-ins. If you have a patio, you should consider having a detachable handle with a cylinder lock. Bright lighting with motion sensors can also deter thieves in the darker periods of the year. In many cases, burglars can be deterred by saying hello to them, so by all means say hello and ask if you can help them in any way.

DRAINAGE

Blocked drains are highly critical. Prevent blockages by dripping a little washing-up liquid, such as Yes, mixed with warm water down your drains from time to time. You can also prevent blockages by regularly cleaning hair and other things that could cause blockages out of the floor drain.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

Electricity is not something to play around with. We therefore recommend that you check at regular intervals to ensure that all electrical cables are intact. Broken electronics should be thrown away in our refuse room. You’re welcome to read more about how to prevent fire and accidents on the National Electrical Safety Board website.
